A lost key shouldn’t mean a lost account.

Recovery, protected ownership and a waiting period are part of the account itself — not add-ons you bolt on later.

Where control breaks today

A plain wallet has no plan B.

Ordinary wallets can’t express “after a wait”, “only this address” or “only this person” — and if the key is lost, there’s no way back.

Lose the key, lose the account

With a plain wallet, a lost key or seed phrase means the funds are gone for good.

Recovery that relies on trust or paper

Someone who can restore access can often also take it — or the seed phrase sits in a drawer.

Protections spread across tools

A multisig here, a delay there, an allowlist in your code — the gaps are where incidents happen.

Changing rules by moving the assets

When a setup stops fitting, the usual answer is to deploy something new and move everything over.

In practice

Set up recovery before you need it.

If the owner’s key is lost, the recovery address requests ownership and takes over after the wait.

What you set up

  • Owner, broadcaster and recovery on separate wallets
  • Recovery kept apart from the owner key
  • A waiting period long enough to notice
  • A practice run on a test network

Illustrative

The approach

The account carries its own rules.

Roles, waits, permitted targets and recovery are properties of the account — enforced whichever interface sends the request.

Three keys, three jobs

The owner sets the rules, a broadcaster submits signed work, and recovery steps in only if the owner is lost. Each is a different address.

Recovery designed in

One recovery address, set in advance. It can’t spend or approve — it can only take ownership, after the wait.

Ownership changes you see coming

A transfer of ownership waits in the queue for the full waiting period, and the recovery address can cancel it.

Adjust policy in place

Grant and revoke permissions or change the wait on the account you already run.

Before the bad day

What the account enforces — and what stays with you.

A smart account adds structure around keys. It doesn’t replace looking after them.

Enforced by the account

  • Owner, broadcaster and recovery kept as separate addresses
  • The waiting period, including on ownership transfers
  • A recovery address that can only take ownership
  • An on-chain record of every change

Your responsibility

  • Choosing a trustworthy recovery address
  • Key management for owner and recovery
  • Setting a waiting period long enough to notice problems
  • Reviewing what you approve

Make your next account recoverable.
